driving through a tunnel in Quito

February 2019 - I took a taxi through Qutio on my way to hike on the Pichinchas. We entered this wide tunnel to an incredible sound. I stayed quiet to listen. The windows were down and you could smell diesel and wet concrete. That small always reminds me of visiting my grandparents and the smell of their garage. I always keep a little notebook in my back-pocket for remembering locations, new words, things I’ve learned and I pulled it out to note the tunnel location. I later lost that notebook.

[ a distinct whirring sound that both rumbles and drones at a higher frequency, there is some wind in the midground that becomes increasingly present at the track goes on. The whirring eventually fades as the wind and sounds from higway traffic move to the foreground. ]
